In an August 2007 town meeting, I shared the frustration of my constituents that the war in Iraq continued. I expressed my belief that some Democrats in 2006 overestimated the ability of a single house of Congress to end the war, particularly in the face of an intransigent President and Senate Republicans who are committed to continuing the war.
I believe that it is time for the Iraqis to take care of Iraq, and we need to execute a sensible withdrawal plan.
During this Memorial Day weekend when we are mourning the loss of a local soldier killed in Afghanistan, now is not the time for politics. We should concentrate on honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our nation. There will be time enough in the future to have a debate about the future of America’s role in Iraq.
